Libre is the free Wireleap relay network, powered by the community and supporters of the Wireleap project. It is free to use, provided for the purposes of casual usage, testing, and community feedback.
Wireleap is a decentralized communications protocol and open-source software designed with the goal of providing unrestricted access to the Internet from anywhere.
There is no one Wireleap network, rather a series of independently operated networks (free or paid). The network operator could run all the relays on the network, or allow others to run the relays that power the network. Additionally, a relay could enroll into multiple networks simultaneously.
Libre /ˈliːbrə/ in English is adopted from the various Romance languages, ultimately descending from the Latin word līber; its origin is closely related to liberty. It denotes “the state of being free”, as in “liberty” or “having freedom”.
Wireleap is intended to enable “an internet without borders”, providing unrestricted internet access for everyone in the world, no matter where they are. Wireleap Libre is a stepping stone towards this goal. It’s a free Wireleap relay network, powered by the community and supporters of the Wireleap project. It is free to use, provided for the purposes of casual usage, testing, and community feedback.
The network (or more accurately, the service contract and relay directory) is operated by the Wireleap project, but the relays are not. Relays are currently operated by a subset of organizations supporting the project, and the network will soon be opened up for relay enrollment to more organizations and the community at large. If you or your organization is interested in supporting the initiative, please reach out.
While the Libre network is completely free to use, infrastructure isn’t, and free networks cannot scale to provide unrestricted access for everyone in the world. This is why Wireleap is designed to allow for incentivization of the traffic being relayed, essentially compensating relays for service provided.
In the future look out for paid offerings, or consumer VPN companies implementing Wireleap for their customers. The Libre network will continue to be free regardless.
